Spay or Neuter Surgery

YOUR PUPPY’S OR KITTEN’S FUTURE SPAY OR NEUTER SURGERY

We recommend puppies and kittens be spayed or neutered at 5-6  months of age. This is also an ideal time to have your puppy permanently identified with a microchip. The permanent identification can then be used for a lifetime license. The microchip is injected under the skin just between the shoulder blades and can be scanned for identification.

To have your puppy or kitten spayed or neutered please call Conneaut Lake Veterinary Hospital at 814-382-5446 to schedule the surgery. On the day of surgery you will drop your pet off at the hospital between 8:00-8:30am. We suggest nothing fed after 9:00pm the evening prior to surgery. Water is permitted right up until time of arrival.

You will be shown a surgical release that addresses several issues pertaining to your pet’s surgery. These issues are:

  • Basic blood profile which helps to evaluate the liver and
  • kidney status, blood protein and blood glucose levels
  • The administration of pain medication
  • The use and/or need for an e-collar
  • Phone number(s) where you can be reached

Your pet’s recovery is important to us so we recommend that they remain hospitalized overnight. A post-surgical evaluation of your puppy’s status is done the morning after surgery. Please call the office after 9:30am following the day of surgery to check on the status of your puppy and possibly schedule a time to pick up. A discharge form will be filled out for your pet with any special instructions for post-operative care at home. You will speak to a technician regarding special instructions.
